Traditional approaches by themselves have not proven effective for this rare type of cancer, but a comprehensive alternative approach will activate the immune system, improve well-being, and sustain quality of life as the body does what it is designed to do - go after and destroy cancer cells and prevent recurrence of the disease. It has been more than 14 years since the day I was first told that I had this rare and aggressive form of cancer. After two surgeries to remove all visible evidence of the disease, my oncologist consulted with a major cancer center and confirmed that no form of chemotherapy or radiation would be useful. Those treatments were really just palliative for this disease. Secretly I was glad, and I moved ahead on a journey to do everything humanly possible to strengthen my immune system and allow my body to do what it was made to do - identify rogue cells and destroy them.

The very first step is to LET GO OF STRESS. Your mind plays a vital role in your body's health, and FEAR produces chemicals that interfere with your immune system. Immerse yourself in self-care, guided imagery, meditations, laughter, and intentional positive thoughts. BREATHE deeply and connect with your inner peace and higher power or source.

On these pages you will be able to go on my journey with me. I encourage you to start at the beginning. Take it one step at a time, but develop a passion for everything that strengthens the immune system, and let go of everything that hinders it.

I know this is scary, but let's make a pact that from this moment you are going to focus your mind fiercely on the fact that you are going to be well! I am so grateful that the very first thing my mother did was to give me HOPE. She told me that I was going to live. She connected me with a coworker who had overcome cancer through the same methods I used. She supplied me with lots of materials that set me on my journey to take control of my mind and harness its power as a forceful, healing machine. She stood by me each step of the way as I explored all of the alternative healing modalities and sought to undo whatever had contributed to my body's breakdown.

Through this process, I began to feel more well than I had ever felt in my entire life. My mind let go of anxiety, and I began to feel at peace and vibrantly alive.

By Grace, I have never had a recurrence of ULMS. I remain cancer-free to this day. I am now 66 years old and continue my passion for the things that create and preserve my Well-Being. Best wishes and blessings to you!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2464301665723274408.post-73177012437341801212014-06-28T20:59:00.004-07:002023-01-12T17:30:27.652-08:00 Guided Imagery for Cancer Patients

Don't underestimate its importance in your recovery! As soon as you receive a cancer diagnosis, your mind becomes overwhelmed by scary thoughts that produce strong stress hormones. Cortisol and adrenaline pump through your veins and suppress the function of your immune system at the very time you need it most. Unless you learn how to turn off these stress hormones, you leave yourself vulnerable to the spread of disease. When I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, I knew I had to find a way to calm myself down and be able to breathe again.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">In 2008, I was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma. I was told that I had a 50% chance of living two years, and a 20% chance of living five years. That's enough to scare anybody! Well, it has been almost six years now, and I am completely healthy with absolutely no recurrence of the disease. My doctor says, "Remarkable! You're remarkable! You give me hope. Keep doing what you are doing." Part of my healing protocol has been to do guided imagery and meditation every single day. I knew from the start that my mind was the battlefront, because e<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">very part of our being, including our cells, sympathizes or responds to the positive and negative states of our minds. <span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">For this reason, when we are diagnosed with cancer, we must find a way to alleviate mental and emotional stress in order to allow our mind to be free to instruct the body to heal itself.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">Stress produces hormones that<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;"> can sabotage your entire healing program by interfering with the function of your natural killer cells, the ones that identify cancer cells and mark them for destruction. Your body chemistry reacts dramatically to your thoughts and your emotions. You may experience trouble sleeping, feel sick to your stomach, have difficulty thinking clearly, and suffer debilitating fatigue. Many health problems, especially cancer, do not permanently clear up unless the mental aspect is also addressed. The mind-body connection is powerful, and j<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">ust as surely as your mind can make your body sick, it can make your body well.<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">Listening to a guided meditation can shut off the mental chatter in your mind, bringing you to a place of peace and tranquility. It has the ability to reach deep into your subconscious and change your body's chemistry, stopping the release of stress hormones and lowering the level of cortisol in your blood. <span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">There are many nice recordings on the market - in fact, I own most of them - but I found that none of them had everything I was looking for in one place. So I decided to produce my own guided meditations beginning with the first one entitled De-Stress and Relax with Jeannie.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: medium;">
De-Stress and Relax with Jeannie is specifically designed to turn off stress hormones and restore your sense of well-being. Whether you are newly diagnosed, or on a lifelong journey to stay in remission, this first CD (audio download) will be invaluable to your recovery. It will teach you how to turn off the negative mental chatter that is so detrimental to your healing, and focus on the present moment, which is the practice of mindfulness*. The soothing sounds of ocean waves and beautiful meditative music send a signal to your brain that it is time to relax and heal. This is your time now, a time to let go of stress, anxiety, worry, depression, anger, resentment or fear. The more often you listen, the faster your body will enter the state of total relaxation and inner stillness, activating your immune system and releasing dysfunctional energy. You will empower yourself by learning to use your mind as a formidable force to make you well.
Preventing Recurrence of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma is My Full-Time Job

It was November of 2008 when I was diagnosed with Uterine Leiomyosarcoma. My lab report said it was Stage II/III with a mitotic count
of 100 in a 10X magnification field. The sky high mitotic count definitely
downgraded my prognosis. Typically a mitotic count of 1-2 is low and 9-10 is
high. My score of 100 indicated that the cancer had been multiplying rapidly. I
was told I'd have a 50% chance to live 2 years, and a 27% chance to live 5
years. That's when I immediately embarked on a total change
of lifestyle, one that would nourish my physical body and create a pervasive
sense of relaxation and well-being. If I was going to ask my immune system to
prevent this cancer from returning, I had to do my part by adopting the best
practices to optimize my own body’s healing ability.

My number one goal each day is to stay peaceful and calm
inside, like it feels when you've just had a massage, or upon awakening from a
deep and peaceful sleep. Guided imagery, affirmations and meditation help me to
do this, along with walks in nature, acupuncture and deep breathing. My second
job is to focus on the physiological and biochemical needs of my body - my
nutrition, my supplements, my juicing, my exercise... and so much more. Since
my diagnosis my body demands that I put my physical and emotional health first,
and I don't feel guilty about doing it. You will need to decide that your
health is more important than anything else and that your full-time job is taking
care of you. At first, this is all I want you to do.

Your mind can aid in making your body well, but you will need to be actively involved in the process. I recommend that you take time off from your job for at least one year after surgery. I waited two years before resuming part-time work. Right now your full-time job is to make yourself well. You will begin a rigorous program of mind-body training, detoxification, and exercise. Time will be needed to shop for organic foods, juice vegetables, and prepare nutritious raw, vegan meals. My husband and my mother both remind me that my job is to focus on wellness, and everything else must be subservient to that goal.

Your body listens and responds to your subconscious thoughts, so it is not enough just to verbalize that you are going to become well - you must believe it in your core, in your spirit, in your "energy," in your subconscious mind.

Right now, your mind is the battlefront. Focus on everything that
is uplifting.

negative guided imagery on yourself!

Learn to listen to your heart - when your spirit is in balance, you will feel
love, joy, peace, perseverance, gentleness, goodness, humility and
self-control. When your spirit is out of balance and in distress, you will
experience anger, resentment, hatred, bitterness, excessive worry, and the
ultimate spiritual stronghold of cancer - fear.

I began this blog because when I was diagnosed there was NOTHING positive to
read about survivors of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma. In fact, my doctor told me NOT
to look it up on the internet! Since that time my blog has been reaching women all
over the world, in nearly every country you can think of. I've also started a
Facebook page where women and caregivers can comment and ask questions as
well.

I realize that if you are newly diagnosed, or if you are a caregiver of a newly
diagnosed patient, that sifting though all of these blog pages can be a bit
overwhelming. For that reason I have decided to write a book so that you can
have the information at home in your own hands to refer to again and again. I
hope to have my book available in the coming months.

Remember that your body is designed to prevent cancer from multiplying. At one
point, something got out of balance and your immune system failed to work
properly. I know that stress played a huge role in my own cancer. I also
know that my body can change. It can be made well, nourished and strong, able
to prevent the cancer from returning.

It has been five years since my diagnosis, and I have not had any recurrence of
the disease. My body is preventing the cancer from returning. When I saw my
doctor he said, " Remarkable! Remarkable! Keep doing what you are
doing!" I most certainly will.

Self-Care Products for the Anti-Cancer Lifestyle

The anti-cancer lifestyle is simple:

1. Give your body the finest nutritional foods and supplements.

2. Remove anything that takes energy away from your healing.

I don't think any of us believe that chemicals belong inside our bodies. But in today's world, we unwittingly subject ourselves to many more toxic substances than we realize. Once chemicals find their way inside the body, the immune system must spend precious energy removing them. If we continue putting unwanted chemicals into our bodies, the immune system will not be able to spend all of its resources on healing disease. That's why I choose to reduce my chemical exposure by selecting makeup and skin care products with better ingredients.

When I was diagnosed with Uterine Leiomyosarcoma, I went to see a Naturopath for a complete battery of tests. I wanted to know what types of things might be taxing my immune system and preventing it from stopping the cancer. The results came back: my body had excessive amounts of parabens and phthalates. Personal care items containing phthalates include perfume, eye shadow, moisturizer, nail polish, liquid soap and hair spray. Parabens are man-made chemicals that are used as preservatives. They are widely used in self-care products and makeup.

If you have high levels of toxins in your body, you may wish to include some homeopathic treatments that promote the release of these chemicals from the system. The medications I used are made by Professional Formulas. Sometimes you can find them online, but most often they are supplied by a Naturopath or other homeopathic doctor.

Here are some of the products I used from Professional Formulas for my detoxification:

Beautox (for chemicals related to beauty products), Enviro Detox, Household Dust and Mold, Sick Building Detox, Mer Detox (for high levels of mercury)

For more details about my lifestyle of diet and supplements, please visit this page: Surviving Uterine Leiomyosarcoma - How I Fit Everything Into My Day

My Naturopath warned me that if I continued my exposure to these same chemicals, it would be useless to detox them. So I replaced all of my self-care and makeup products with safer, less toxic ones. I wanted products that performed as well or better than the products I had used before, so it took a bit of testing to find which ones would be acceptable.

Here are my favorites:

Household

The Ecover line of Dishwashing Soap and Automatic Dishwashing Tablets do a great job. Mrs. Meyers Clean Day products smell wonderful and offer a bit of aromatherapy while you are cleaning. The Method brand makes a great line of cleaning products, too, including Wood for Good and Daily Granite Cleaner. Microfiber cleaning cloths and mops are a great way to clean without chemicals. If any harsher chemicals need to be used, I let others do the application and keep windows open.

Skincare

I cream my face with Earth Science A-D-E Creamy Cleanser both morning and night, using a soft microfiber cloth and warm water to remove it. Eye makeup comes off easily with Earth Science Chamomile and Green Tea Eye Makeup Remover, and you only need a small amount. Twice a week I exfoliate with Earth Science Apricot Gentle Face Scrub which has a nice fragrance. My favorite anti-aging product is Earth Science A/B Hydroxy Acid Night Rejuvenator. I use three pumps every night, and two pumps every morning before applying my makeup. The Hydroxy Acid Rejuvenator keeps lines and wrinkles away and leaves skin feeling soft and silky. For more dramatic results, I combine the Hydroxy Acid Rejuvenator with 3 pumps of Derma E Evenly Radiant Overnight Peel and apply them together at night as often as needed. A spa facial moisturizer that is less toxic and really works to plump up the skin is SkinScript's Hydrating Moisturizer. You only need a tiny bit applied with damp fingertips so it lasts and lasts.

Makeup

My foundation used to be Ecco Bella Flower Color Natural Foundation in "Natural." Now I am so pleased to be using Mychelle's Cream Foundation in Ivory and/or Porcelain since I discovered it about two months ago. It is so natural looking but has coverage at the same time! I follow it up with a light dusting of a loose face powder with no parabens. I don't have a favorite yet. Next, I brush on Jane Iredale's Cotton Candy blush. It's such a pretty, natural-looking pink. (BTW I have tried Ecco Bella's blush and it is way too bright!) I like Jane Iredale eyeshadows, and prefer matte colors. The quality is so nice! I suggest going in person to a spa where you can try on their products and find just the right color for you. There are several non-toxic mascaras that are good, but Mineral Fusion has one that is reasonably priced and works well. I line my lips with Ecco Bella's lip liner in pink, and then apply just a dab of Gabriel Color Sheer Rose lipstick for a bright pink, OR I line my lips with Boots No. 7's rose colored lip liner and fill it in with Gabriel Color's Rosewood lipstick for a more natural or "nude" look. For a glossy shine, I like Alba Botanica's Hawaiian Clear Lip Gloss in Coconut Cream.

Self-care

For self-care, I use non-toxic hand soap, lotion, and body wash. There are lots of good products to choose from - Nature's Gate liquid hand soaps, Avalon Organics liquid soaps/ shower gels, or Alba Botanica shower gel. I brush my teeth with Eco-Dent Tarter Guard Mint Tooth Powder, and whiten with Eco-Dent Extra Brite Special Care Tooth Powder. For deodorant I prefer Alvera All-Natural Deodorant in Aloe and Almonds. Perfumes are more difficult - right now I am using Yakshi Essential Oil Roll-On Fragrances in Whitestar Jasmine. I'd like to try something new.

Please feel free to comment on your favorite non-toxic beauty products!

Mornings

Mornings are my time to nourish myself. I am a "morning person" so I use my best time to tend to myself rather than putting myself last. (This was an important concept to learn.)

Upon awaking, I lie still in bed, face up with arms at sides, and mentally scan each part of my body, noting how each part feels. It's a lovely, dreamy feeling when your body first wakes up, and it's a great time to mentally memorize what relaxation feels like so you can learn to carry it with you throughout the rest of the day. Next, I imagine roots growing out of my feet going deep down into the earth, grounding me. I ask to be cleared mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually from anything that hinders my health and healing. Then, I listen for guidance. Finally, I take my hands and hold their warmth above any part of my body that needs healing. I imagine a white light from Heaven coming in through the top of my head and flowing through my hands, bringing a healing energy to any part of my body that needs it. This is part of what is called energy work.

Upon arising, I always scrape my tongue and brush my teeth to get rid of bacteria before consuming any food. I start the day by taking two tablespoons of Liposomal Curcumin (which stops tumor growth by preventing the formation of blood vessels which feed the tumor) and Liposomal Can-Help Complex (a liposomal nano particle blend of vitamin c, glutathione, curcumin, resveretrol, CoQ10, B1, B6 & B12 designed to replicate intravenous vitamin c results). It is extremely important to take these in liposomal form because they pass through the gut directly into the bloodstream. They are taken on an empty stomach, so I might get showered, clean the kitchen, juice vegetables, go for a walk, or check my e-mail while I wait to have breakfast.

Breakfast includes fresh pressed juice. I juice once every three days and put it up in 8 ounce glass canning jars filled to the brim in the refrigerator. For practical purposes, I don't juice every day, but if you are able to, or you are fighting active disease I would recommend juicing every day. (My family juiced every day for me in the beginning.) I always juice carrot-apple-celery; carrot-apple-dandelion; cucumber-celery; and red beet-apple. In the summer I love Kale lemonade. Adding a little apple releases more nutrients in the carrots than if you do carrot alone. The nutrients in juiced carrots are cancer fighters. Dandelion is a liver detoxifier (and my mother had a dream about it healing me). Beets are also a liver cleanser. Cucumber juice is used at the Optimum Health Institute during their detoxification week.

The other part of breakfast includes a piece of Ezekiel 100% flourless toast (made solely from sprouts) with 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil or coconut oil on it. Note that I don't consume any product made from flour. Flour products break down into sugar too quickly and are NOT consumed on the anti-cancer diet. At that time I drink a cup of organic, water processed decaf coffee with coconut milk creamer. Yum! I take supplements with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For the first 2 1/2 years I was a raw Vegan, following the Hallelujah Acres Diet. But in the past year I
have had to add a small amount of organic, free-range animal protein back into my diet to build up my muscle
tissue. Nuts and lentils just weren't doing it for me! Once a week I eat a couple of organic, cage-free, free-range
eggs for breakfast. Locally grown is best. Once every week or two I will enjoy Wild-Caught Salmon. I never eat dairy because the protein found in dairy, known as casein, was used in numerous laboratory studies to turn on and off cancerous tumors on in mice (The China Study). I don't eat chicken, pork or beef. I don't eat products made from flour; instead I eat organic, sprouted, flourless products from Ezekiel or Oasis bakeries, but no more than one slice per day. Corn and soy are notorious genetically modified foods - I never eat them unless they say organic and non-GMO. I also avoid sweets with the exception of organic, dark chocolate. For the most part, you are better off to eat a piece of fruit as your "treat." I don't use Agave - from my research it is no better than high fructose corn syrup. When my sweet tooth calls, I look for the lowest grams of sugar in organic dark chocolate. :)

The middle of the morning is a very productive time for me. My original tendency was to work hard at this time. But I have changed that! Now I use that time to make sure I get done the things I need to do for myself first. So I may juice, go shopping at my favorite organic store, prepare my salads, read a healing book, exercise or get out in the sunlight at this time. I never tire myself out! A wise holistic MD once told me that you should SAVE YOUR ENERGY FOR HEALING. If you are in the early stages of recovery, sit outdoors and read a book. Relax! Allow your body to use the energy it has to heal you. Don't use up all of your energy doing things until you feel tired. Now I get a lot done each day without getting tired. But I make sure to only do one or two big things a day and always STOP before I feel worn out. I always take along my green drink or drink it right before I go.

Lunch Time

For Lunch I sit down and have a big, organic salad with spinach, arugala, 2 kinds of sprouts (pea sprouts or sunflower sprouts and broccoli sprouts), raw broccoli, tomatoes, red onions, strawberries or blueberries (in season), cucumber, red bell pepper, and purple cabbage. That is my standard salad. I make other salads with fewer ingredients, but my standard salad ensures that I have dark greens, calciferous veggies and sprouts that I must consume daily. I enjoy an ak-mak organic cracker with soup or salad. I love to drink a Kombucha with my lunch and perhaps another juice at this time. In the colder months, I make soup from a base of organic broth with carrots, leeks, tomatoes, zucchini, yellow onions, red lentils, split peas, garlic and seasonings. I also enjoy tomato-basil soup, vegetable soup, broccoli soup, carrot-ginger soup all made from scratch with organic ingredients.
Descriptions of Things I Do Daily or Weekly

1. Juicing - I juice vegetables and put up jars to drink over the next day or two. I do this every third day. I drink at least 2 glasses of fresh pressed vegetable juice and 2 Barley Max or green drinks every day. When I was first diagnosed I drank one 8 ounce glass of juice every hour of the day. It is an essential part of healing from cancer. Juice provides nutrients that go directly into the bloodstream without having to be digested.

2. Meditation and Guided Imagery - I do this every day. Sometimes I listen to Guided Imagery when I take a walk outside. Other times I sit in a special place that I have made for myself where I meditate with incense, candles and music. Another way to meditate is to read one of the healing books and allow the thoughts to bring healing to the mind. Many of the Guided Imagery CD's also include energy work.
Deuter - a great artist who makes music for meditation - Buddha Nature and Reiki Hands of Light are favorites
Native American Flute Music for Meditation

3. Exercise and Sunlight - I try to do some form of exercise and get out in the sunlight 3-4 times a week. Sometimes it means eating a meal outside on my deck, or going for a walk on the trail. I also enjoy Jazzercise, Zumba, and a circuit at the gym. My goal for this summer is to exercise a lot more! Exercise boosts the immune system by stimulating the lymphatic system which eliminates toxins. In order to get the lymph fluid flowing, you must MOVE your body. It doesn't have a pump like the heart does to move the blood. Aerobic activity is the best way to do this.

4. Shopping and Preparing Salads - I shop at an organic co-op that has the freshest, organic produce possible. I make one or two huge salads that will last me for 5 to 7 days. This way I just grab of big portion of my salad for lunch and dinner, without the constant preparation.

5. Emotional Clearing and Healing - I found it imperative to go through the Cancer Self-Healing Guide. It took me many months to journal through all of the questions, but it allowed me to clear myself of all old wounds which some cancer experts believe can cause a recurrence of the disease. Now I do a daily clearing, asking the Heavens to clear me of anything that binds me emotionally. I pay close attention to my heart and my gut, so I don't allow anger or resentment to take root in my pain body.

6. Acupuncture - At least once a week I go for acupuncture. I found a practitioner that creates a great space with music and candles. She teaches me about energy work and energy healing as well as doing my acupuncture sessions. Acupuncture is an absolute MUST for my well-being, healing, and physical comfort.

7. Non-Toxic Environment and Non-Toxic Beauty - In the beginning I worked with a naturopath who used lab tests and homeopathic remedies to help detoxify my system. Now I use all non-toxic products to clean my home. Everything that touches my body, face, and scalp are always non-toxic, free of parabens, SLS and unwanted chemicals.

I know that a large portion of the oral supplements I take pass through my body and are excreted into my urine.

I also know that laboratory studies using vitamins and herbs to stop the growth of cancer cells have been successful when they are administered directly to the cells.

Vitamin C (like Curcumin and Resveratrol) is very difficult for the body to absorb when taken orally. This is particularly true when Vitamin C is taken in large oral doses. Until the advent of Liposomal Vitamin C, the only efficient method of getting therapeutic levels of Vitamin C into the blood stream was intravenously. This required administration and attendance by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Liposomal supplements are a new breed of supplements which are able to deliver Vitamins and Herbs directly to the cellular level, unlike any other traditional pill or liquid form.

Nano-technology refers to creating micro particles of the active material one wishes to coat with liposomes - in this case Curcumin, Vitamin C, Glutathione, CoQ10, and Resveratrol. This requires expensive equipment and considerable time to complete. These micro particles are then inserted into special fat soluble materials resembling micro bubbles just a few millionths of an inch in diameter which are capable of sliding through the gut lining without being digested. The “bubbles” are now in the blood stream and are offered to the cells of the body as needed. As with the gut wall, the cell wall loves liposomes because they are made up of similar material (phosphytidal choline, lecithin, phosphytidal serine, CLA, etc) and the enclosed Anti-Cancer Supplement is delivered directly into the cell, while the liposomes are used by the cell wall or for other functions within the cell.

Doctors in Germany and other areas of Europe are now using liposomal encapsulated anti-cancer drugs as well as liposomal encapsulated anti-cancer supplements. M.D. Anderson is doing clinical trials with Nano-Curcumin and Nano-Resveratrol. Here's the thing - "Patients must have an advanced malignancy that has either failed one or more prior therapies, or for which there is no established standard of care therapy that improves survival by at least 3 months." In other words, if they can use Chemo or Radiation to extend your life 3 months, you can't be part of the trial. So they are testing these supplements on very sick individuals. Why not conduct a trial testing these Nano-technology Liposomals on people who have earlier stages of cancer to see if they can prevent metastases?

I don't need to wait for a clinical trial. I'm getting the latest technology into my body right away! I'm encouraging my husband to use it, too, as a preventative.

I felt that it was time to re-evaluate my supplements, and after learning about the liposomal encapsulated Vitamin C and Curcumin, I made the following changes:

I'm now taking 2 Tablespoons a day of Liposomal CAN-HELP Complex Nutritional Support Formula, with Liposomal Vitamin C, Glutathione, Resveratrol, Curcumin, CoQ10 and Vitamins B1, B6, B12 & Folic Acid, designed to provide nutritional support for the cancer patient.

I'm taking 1 Tablespoon a day of Liposomal Curcumin which is proven to stop angiogenesis- blood vessels that help cancer grow. "When rats with mammary cancer were given 200mg/kg of Curcumin each day for just five days, the tumors were significantly inhibited. This would mean that a 165 pound female would have to ingest 15,000 mg of Curcumin on a daily basis - unless you were using Liposomal Curcumin, then you would only need about 1,200 mg. Quite a difference! Just four teaspoonfuls of the Liposomal Curcumin would give you that amount!"

I'm taking 1 Tablespoon a day of Liposomal Resveratrol. “Resveratrol can inhibit all three stages of chemical carcinogenesis - tumor initiation, promotion and progression.” This study was later published in the medical journal Lancet.

Here are the other things I continue to take:

Bio-identical Hormones made at a compounding pharmacy and prescribed by my Naturopath, Dr. Mazza. I take Estrodial, Progesterone and DHEA. She monitors my blood and saliva to check my balance. (Update - I'm only using a tiny bit of Estrodial 2x a week.)

New Chapter whole food Calcium (2 tabs/ 3x a day)

Jarrow MK-7 (1 per day)

Carlson's Liquid Vitamin D-3 (8 drops)

Nature's Way DIM-plus (1 per day)

Natural Factors Liquid Biosil Silica (6 drops)

Integrative Therapeutics Lipotropic Complex (methylation support) (3 caps/ 2x a day)

Barlean's High Lignan Flax Seed Oil (1 Tbsp.)

Carlson's Norwegian Fish Oil (1 Tbsp.).

I get the best prices at Vitacost.com.

I found the best price on Liposomal Supplements here:

It helps me to calm my nerves and activate the mind-body healing connection.

For more information, visit the Guided Imagery for Cancer Patients tab at the top of my blog.

Please leave a comment if you have a supplement that has made a difference in your treatment of cancer. The human body is not just the blood and bones we perceive on the physical plane. We are made of energy that permeates every layer of our being. What we know as the physical body is energy that is vibrating more slowly than the energy that is beyond our standard perception.

According to W. Brugh Joy, M.D., throughout our body we have centers of energy which are connected to major organs or glands that govern other body parts. When these energy centers are out of balance, the body does not function optimally. Meditation is a good time to go through each of these areas, one by one, and direct thoughts of healing and love into each center.
Once I've reached a state of total relaxation during a meditation session, I begin visualizing Energy in the form of a glittering purple Light as it goes through every system in my body - cleansing, healing, and empowering my immune system. Then I go through the energy centers, one by one, and visualize them bathed in their own energy color, as shown on the chart. Start by spending 1-2 minutes on each area and work up to 5 minutes per area.

Once I was diagnosed with cancer, it became my full-time job to do everything I could to empower my immune system to prevent a recurrence of the disease. That was very important because I was given a 20% chance of living 5 years, and no medical treatments had been successful at extending the survival time. It had to be my own immune system that would keep the cancer from returning.

I knew in my heart that I had been under a lot of stress, and I was ready to relinquish control in order to heal. Working with a therapist, I completed the 28 Tasks in the Cancer Self-Healing Guide from the Puna Wai Ora Mind-Body Cancer Clinic in New Zealand. It's designed to help you heal the root psycho-emotional cause of cancer - because when life is hard, we may develop an unconscious desire to exit this life which must be addressed if we want to heal completely.

What is the Cancer Personality Type?

According to Dr. W. Douglas Brodie: "In dealing with many thousands of cancer patients over the past 28 years, it has been my observation that there are certain personality traits present in the cancer-susceptible individual. These traits are as follows:

1. Being highly conscientious, caring, dutiful, responsible, hard-working, and usually of above average intelligence.

2. Exhibits a strong tendency toward carrying other people's burdens and toward taking on extra obligations, and often "worrying for others."

3. Having a deep-seated need to make others happy. Being a "people pleaser" with a great need for approval.

4. Often lacking closeness with one or both parents, which sometimes, later in life, results in lack of closeness with spouse or others who would normally be close.

5. Harbors long-suppressed toxic emotions, such as anger, resentment and / or hostility. The cancer-susceptible individual typically internalizes such emotions and has great difficulty expressing them.

6. Reacts adversely to stress, and often becomes unable to cope adequately with such stress. Usually experiences an especially damaging event about 2 years before the onset of detectable cancer. The patient is not able to cope with this traumatic event or series of events, which comes as a "last straw" on top of years of suppressed reactions to stress.

7. Has an inability to resolve deep-seated emotional problems/conflicts, usually beginning in childhood, often even being unaware of their presence.

Typical of the cancer-susceptible personality, as noted above, is the long-standing tendency to suppress "toxic emotions", particularly anger. Usually beginning in childhood, this individual has held in their hostility and other unacceptable emotions.

More often than not, this feature of the affected personality has its origins in feelings of rejection by one or both parents. Whether these feelings of rejection are justified or not, the individual perceives this rejection as real, and this results in a lack of closeness with the "rejecting" parent, followed later in life by a lack of closeness with spouses and others with whom close relationships would normally develop.

Those at the higher risk for cancer tend to develop feelings of loneliness as a result of their having been deprived of affection and acceptance earlier in life, even if this is only their perception. They have a tremendous need for approval and acceptance, and develop a very high sensitivity to the needs of others while suppressing their own emotional needs.

They become the "caretakers" of the world, showing great compassion and caring for others, and will go out of their way to look after others. They are very reluctant to accept help from others, fearing that it may jeopardize their role as the caretaker. Throughout their childhood they have been typically taught "not to be selfish", and they take this to heart as a major lifetime objective.

All of this is highly commendable in our culture, but must be somehow modified in the case of the cancer patient. A distinction needs to be made here between the "care-giving" and the "care-taking" personality. There is nothing wrong with care-giving, of course, but the problem arises when the susceptible individual derives their entire worth, value and identity from their role as "caretaker". If this very important shift cannot be made, the patient is stuck in this role, and the susceptibility to cancer greatly increases.

As already stated, a consistent feature of those who are susceptible to cancer appears to be that they "suffer in silence", and bear their burdens without complaint. These burdens of their own as well as the burdens of others weigh heavily upon these people through a lifetime of emotional suppression. The carefree extrovert, on the other hand, seems to be far less vulnerable to cancer than the caring introvert described above. How one reacts to stress appears to be a major factor in the larger number of contributing causes of cancer.

Most cancer patients have experienced a highly stressful event, usually about 2 years prior to the onset of detectable disease. This traumatic event is often beyond the patient's control, such as the loss of a loved one, loss of a business, job, home, or some other major disaster. The typical cancer personality has lost the ability to cope with these extreme events, because his/her coping mechanism lies in his/her ability to control the environment. When this control is lost, the patient has no other way to cope.

Major stress causes suppression of the immune system, and does so more overwhelmingly in the cancer-susceptible individual than in others. Thus personal tragedies and excessive levels of stress appear to combine with the underlying personality described above to bring on the immune deficiency which allows cancer to thrive."

According to the Puna Wai Ora Mind-Body Cancer Clinic, "Healing cancer begins with healing your emotions. All cancer is caused by the suppression of, and the inability to let go of negative emotions including anger, hate, resentment and/or grief or guilt. These emotions create tremendous stress in the body that causes cancer over time."

In overcoming any serious or terminal illness, I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of a positive mental/emotional outlook. Finding love and forgiveness, for yourself and others, is paramount to emotional health. I have read many books which suggest that repressed anger, hate, resentment and grief are the root emotional causes leading to the development of cancer. I strongly believe that prolonged periods of psycho-emotional stress can culminate in serious diseases because of the way that stress suppresses the function of the immune system and its ability to destroy microscopic rogue cells before the turn into cancer.

From the time I get up in the morning to the time my head hits the pillow at night, I like to think that everything I am doing has a purpose to promote my healing and well-being. I don't think of it as work - I like to think of it as pampering myself. If I read the statistics about uterine leiomyosarcoma online, I'll be honest - it makes me nauseous. (That's why I created this blog.) But if I keep my mind solely focused on the thing I am doing in the present moment to contribute to my health and well-being, my life is rather wonderful.

Cancer surgeon Dr Ryke-Geerd Hamer from Germany examined 20,000 cancer patients with all types of cancer. Dr Hamer noticed that all his patients seemed to have something in common: there had been some kind of psycho-emotional conflict prior to the onset of their cancer - usually a few years before - a conflict that had never fully resolved. Dr Hamer started including emotional therapy as an important part of the healing process and found that when the specific conflict was resolved, the cancer immediately stopped growing at a cellular level. Isn't that amazing?

My personal goal has been to free myself from all past hurts, resentments and all negative emotions that have been stored in my body. (For more on the "pain body," read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.) When I meditate, my doctor instructed me to send Love into any area of the body that has discomfort or is an area of concern. Love and forgiveness are essential and integral components of the complementary treatment for cancer. The first step to healing is to be open to the idea of forgiveness.

My mantra: "I desire to replace all pain with forgiveness, and have Love as the abiding energy in my body."

With their permission, I am reprinting the 28 Tasks from the Cancer Self-Healing Guide. (http://www.alternative-cancer-care.com/) If you are working through the Self-Healing Guide, I'd love to hear your comments.

At first glance, I thought it would be fairly easy to answer the questions in the Cancer Healing Guide. Once I began the process of writing my responses, however, I found that was not the case. At first it was quite difficult for me to recognize and reveal negative thoughts and emotions that I never chose to acknowledge before. My default programming is to avoid conflict at all costs, and thus I also wanted to avoid writing about any conflicts in my past or present. Scheduling a regular appointment with a therapist gave me a deadline to complete each assignment, and I don't think I would have done it otherwise. My therapist had the professional expertise to help me process and release the negative emotions once I had identified them.

Here are the 28 Tasks in the Cancer Self-Healing Guide from the Puna Wai Ora Mind-Body Cancer Clinic in New Zealand:

1. Write a short paragraph that describes your relationship with your mother.

2. Write a page about what you do/did like about your mother. It does not matter if your mother is living or has passed. If you have two mothers, write one page for each.

3. Write a page about what you do/did not like about your mother. Try to be as honest as you can. If your mother has passed, she will want you to be honest so you can heal.

4. If there were one thing only that you could say to your mother - and it was the last thing you could ever say - what's the one thing you would really like to say to your mother?

5. Write a 2-3 page letter to your mother telling her directly how you feel about her. Express to your mother how you really feel about her deep down, not just if you love her, but if you have anger towards her, or have felt rejected by her in any way. Note: Keep this letter private and do not send it.

6. Write a short paragraph that describes your relationship with your father.

7. Write a page about what you do/did like about your father. It does not matter if your father is living or has passed. If you have two fathers, write one page for each.

8. Write a page about what you do/did not like about your father. As with your mother, try to be as honest as you can. If your father has passed, he will want you to be honest so you can heal.

9. If there were one thing only that you could say to your father - and it was the last thing you could ever say - what's the one thing you would really like to say to your father?

10. Write a 2-3 page letter to your father telling him directly how you feel about him. Express to your father how you really feel about him deep down, not just if you love him, but if you have anger towards him, or have felt rejected by him in any way. Note: Keep this letter private and do not send it.

11. Write a short paragraph about your childhood, how you were feeling up to the age of 15.

12. Write a page on the following: What was the most upsetting experience for you as a child? If there is more than one experience that was very upsetting, then write a page for each.

13. Are you close to your family? Do you feel rejected by anyone in your family? Write a 2-3 page letter to your family telling them directly how you feel. Note: Keep this letter private and do not send it.

14. Write a 2-3 page letter to God or to yourself detailing how you feel about having cancer. Also, rate your level of grief/stress/trauma from 0-10 of having cancer and of being told you have cancer. (It is very important to recognize that new conflicts in your psyche may be brought on by the very stress of having cancer or of painful or nauseating therapies.)

15. Write a whole page on the following: Who has caused you the most pain in your life? How has this person caused you pain? If you feel you wish to write further about his experience, then do so.

16. Write a whole page about a time in your life when you were abused. If there were multiple experiences, then write a page for each. If you wish to write further about each, then do so.

17. Excluding your parents, write a short paragraph about each significant relationship you have had in your life. (i.e. husband, wife, partner, spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend)

18. Write a 2-3 page letter to each of these people you have had a significant relationship with, telling each one how you feel about them. Note: Keep these letters private and do not send them.

19. Do you suppress your emotions and your emotional needs? If so, write in detail when you do this and how you do this. (A consistent feature of those who are susceptible to cancer appears to be that they "suffer in silence," and bear their burdens without complaint. Burdens of their own as well as others weigh heavily upon these people because they, through a lifetime of suppression, internalize their problems/conflicts. This suffering in silence takes the joy out of life and leads to the inner feeling that life is too hard and not worth living, leading to the subconscious wish to die.)

20. Write a 2-3 page letter to any person you are still feeling noticeably strong feelings of anger and hate for, and explain why in your letter. This may require writing an additional letter to a parent, etc. if there are still feelings of anger and hate left unspoken or not yet resolved. If you have a belief in God, you are encouraged to write a 2-3 page letter to God, expressing any anger or hate towards God you feel about your life, so it can be released and healed. Note: Keep these letters private and do not send.

21. Cancer may be caused by a significant loss or losses in life, resulting in complicated grief. Write a 2-3 page account of each significant loss you have experienced in your life, and explain why it is so painful. If it concerns someone who has passed over (including any miscarriages or abortions), or a relationship that has ended, write a 2-3 page account of each one.

22. Cancer is sometimes caused by guilt, a need for punishment, which brings about the condition of illness and great pain. Write a 2-3 page letter to each person you feel you have hurt or let down, including a letter to God (if you feel you have let God down, or just generally feel like a bad person). In each letter, explain why you did what you did, or why you feel like you are a bad person, and also why you feel you should be punished and for how long.

23. Even though you may want to stay alive for your family because you love them and they love you, is there a part of your deep down that really is tired of life, feels life has no purpose or joy anymore, and maybe you wish you didn't have to endure such a hard life? This is the time for you to be completely honest and express these feelings on paper. Write a 10 page letter to God or to yourself explaining why you do not want to be here on Earth anymore. Expressing your feeling of wanting this life to end will not manifest more cancer in your body. Not expressing these feelings will. When you express them in this way, you will bring more light and healing into this part of you that is feeling tired of life.

24. Cancer is a disease built on the energy of fear. Write a 5 page letter to God or yourself expressing your deep fears, including your fears of living on Earth and your fears about death and dying.

25. What is the number one thing you want for YOU in your life? What do you really wish your life would be like? And what would you like to remove from your life that is causing you stress, making you tired, and depleting your will to live? Write a 10 page letter to yourself explaining what you would like your life to be like and why you deserve it. It is typical of the cancer personality to put the needs of others first while ignoring their own needs/dreams/desires. Many late-stage cancer survivors have in common the fact that they went on to pursue their dreams despite their dire diagnoses.

26. Write a 2-3 page account of why you believe you have cancer. (The Puma Wai Ora Center teaches that a person who has cancer has suppressed many emotions throughout their life, and there is usually a final "trigger" event that occurs approximately two years prior to diagnosis that causes a subconscious wanting to die and the resultant cancer.) Write about your unhappiness in life, your desire to "exit" life at certain points, and also what you believe was the trigger event. Your desire to exit life does not mean that you had thoughts of suicide but means that you experienced that life was too hard, and you wished that the pain of life would end.

27. Forgiving others is a key component of The Cancer Healing Guide. Write a list of everyone you feel you have not forgiven. Then write a 2-3 page letter to each of these people and explain why you are so angry with them and why you cannot forgive them. (Dr. Bernie Seigel, Clinical Professor of Surgery - Yale Medical School, "I have collected 57 extremely well documented so-called cancer miracles. At a certain particular moment in time they all decided that the anger and depression were probably not the best way to go, since they had such little time left. and so they went from that to being loving, caring, no longer angry, no longer depressed, and able to talk to the people they loved. These 57 people had the same pattern. They gave up, totally, their anger, and they gave up, totally, their depression, by specifically a decision to do so, and at that point the tumors began to shrink."

28. Write a 10 page letter to God or to yourself explaining WHY you want to live. Then once a week after that, read it out loud to affirm your resolution and determination that you now choose life. You may also want to record it on tape, instead of saying it out loud, listening to it once a week or daily.

What I Do To Empower My Lymphatic System

When you are fighting cancer, you need your immune system to heal your body while at the same time destroying the microscopic cancer cells that can lead to metastasis. The lymphatic system is an important part of our immune system and very important to overall health. It's responsible for removing waste, toxins, and other unwanted material out of your cells and tissues so they can be flushed out of your body.

There are over 600 lymph nodes dispersed throughout your body which work along with lymph fluid & vessels and lymph organs & tissues to help the body defend itself against disease. The lymphatic system produces white blood cells and generates disease-fighting antibodies. It rids your body of toxins and cellular waste, but that's not all - it is also responsible for carrying away cancerous cells! So we want it to be working efficiently, don't we? If your lymph stops flowing freely, your garbage begins to pile up as waste accumulates in your cells and tissues.

Lymphocytes attack bacteria and viruses in the blood. They can multiply to attack foreign agents and are carried to all of the tissues in our body by the lymph vessels. Unlike your blood which has a beating heart to move it along, the lymph depends on physical movement in order to keep it flowing. If you don't move much, your lymph doesn't move much either. That's why its important for us to engage in some form of bouncy movement every day, like brisk walking.

The lymph fluid moves through vessels that are filled with one way valves, so the lymph always moves in the same direction. The main lymph vessels run up the legs, up the arms, and up the torso. This is why the vertical up and down movement of brisk walking, jumping rope, light jogging or jumping on a mini-trampoline is so effective to pump the lymph.

There are three ways to activate the flow of lymph fluid away from the tissues, allowing it to take toxins away from the tissues and deliver them back into the blood supply for removal:
1. Exercise and Vertical Movement
2. Gravitational Pressure
3. Massage of the Valves of the Lymph Ducts (by a therapist or by dry skin brushing).

If you are able to go to a therapist trained in the art of lymphatic massage, it would be a great complimentary treatment. I would like to do another 3 day fast with wheat grass and fresh vegetable juice, accompanied by lymphatic massages. This is something we did at the Optimum Health Institute.

Another way to manually "massage" and encourage the lymph to drain is to practice dry brushing. You need a long-handled, natural-hair, skin-brush made specifically for dry skin brushing. Brush your skin when it is dry (usually just before getting in the shower). Brushing strokes correspond with the flow of the lymph which is toward the heart: start with circular motions on the soles of the feet, stroke up each leg, up each arm, up the groin, across the armpits to the chest, etc. Brush gently down from the sides of neck to the armpits. Don't brush nipples. Don't brush wet skin. Brush the back from the spine out to each side. Brush in counter-clockwise circles over the abdomen (corresponding with the flow of elimination).

For daily lymphatic drainage, rebounding is a fantastic exercise. It has the same effect on your body as jumping rope without the jarring effect to the ankles, knees and lower back that comes from hitting the ground. During the course of a rebounding session, the vertical bouncing creates the gravitational pressure and motion to effectively move and recycle the lymph and blood supply through the circulatory system many times. Gentle bouncing for 10 to 20 minutes a day is all that is needed to stimulate lymph drainage. Your feet barely need to leave the mini-trampoline to be effective. I have recently added rebounding for lymphatic drainage to my regular exercise program of walking with periodic short bursts of jogging in the fresh air and sunlight.

UPDATE: If you have osteoporosis of the spine, avoid jumping as it may cause compression fractures. In that case stick to mild bouncing without the feet leaving the trampoline, or stick to brisk walking!

"According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, proper yoga practice combines: 1) Physical postures that participants flow into and then hold, before proceeding to the next posture. 2) A focus on breathing techniques that make participants more aware of their bodies. 3) Deep meditation and relaxation, allowing participants to focus on their spirituality. All of those elements must be in place for people to get the best results for their health and well-being, said Karen Sherman, an affiliate associate professor of epidemiology with the Center for Health Studies in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington."
The article goes on to say....."Be wary of teachers who focus on postures without also emphasizing breathing and meditation. You won't be getting the same benefit."

Within
weeks of being diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma (a rare and very aggressive
cancer), I went to see an extremely reputable naturopath. Intuitively, I knew
there had to be a reason my body got cancer, and I wanted to get to the bottom
of what that was. Dr. Mazza ordered several lab tests which revealed that my
body had very high (literally off-the-charts) levels of certain chemicals
commonly found in grooming and personal care products. The worst offenders were
parabens, phthalates, and chemicals found in hair dyes.

Dr Mazza
explained that there is only so much chemical contamination the body can tolerate
before it leads to a toxic crisis. Many chemicals we are exposed to in our
environment are endocrine disrupters, interfering with the production or
activity of hormones in the human endocrine system. Unless the cause of the
toxicity is discovered and removed, the crisis will eventually lead to organic
disease such as breast and reproductive cancers. I needed to reduce the toxic
burden in my body which meant that I needed to use non-toxic, self-care products!

Before I
was diagnosed with cancer, I was going to the salon on a regular basis to get
highlights. In fact, my hair was more blonde than brown! I knew that I had to
give up my highlights, and I was okay with that, but I wasn’t ready to stop
coloring. So I went in search of the best non-toxic way to color and care for
my hair. My hair is naturally curly, and it takes a lot of product to keep
those curls looking good. When choosing hair color, I didn’t want a product
with peroxide or ammonia because they damage the hair and make it frizzy. So
here was the challenge: to find a non-toxic product that would have the ability
to cover a little gray without using peroxide while providing a natural looking
medium brown color.

m-aminophenol, p-aminophenol, toluene, 2.5 diamine, azo-dyes, diazo-dyes,
disperse dyes, ammonia and parabens - all synthetic chemicals which are known
allergens and suspected carcinogens. It is the cleanest hair color on the

Palette by Nature does not damage the hair so I can grow my hair much longer than before.

Palette by Nature's 6N Light Natural Brown produced a medium-dark brown
color without any red undertones. It changed my grays to golden highlights. In
order to cover a minor amount of gray, however, I had to keep the product on my
head longer than recommended (about double the processing time). The directions
tell you to pile your hair under a cap and keep it warm with a hair dryer in
order to open the hair shaft and allow the color to penetrate. That method
doesn’t work well with super long hair as only the ends of the hair receive the
heat, making the color absorb unevenly. Since my hair is so long, this only
served to darken the ends and made the color uneven, but if I had short hair I
would definitely use that method. Thus, increasing the processing time was the
way I achieved a better result. Once I was finished, the color was permanent
and did not fade. I also tried 5N Medium Natural Brown (a very dark brown
shade) and 4N Dark Natural Brown (almost black) which offered more coverage for
the grays, but were too dark for my complexion.

As the
years go by, more grays appear in my crown and temples. I felt like I needed to
use a product with a little peroxide in order to get the coverage I need in
those particular areas. Naturtint makes a
permanent hair colorant with no parabens, ammonia, resorcinol, silicones,
paraffin, mineral oils, SLS or formaldehyde derivatives, but it does have a
small amount of PPD’s. I purchased a box of 5N Light Chestnut Brown from my
local health food store. One box was enough to cover the bangs, crown, and
temples of my hair. The application was easy, the gray coverage superb, and the
color rich. It was so nice that I decided to buy three boxes and color my now near-waist-length
hair, wanting a uniform color throughout. In no time my hair began to feel dry
and frizzy. The peroxide was too much for my delicate, curly locks. Frankly, my
hair felt like straw – I ended up having to cut quite a bit off in order to
reduce the damage it had done!

I returned to Palette by Nature
and my hair just loved it! It was full of shine, bouncy curls and a nice dark
brown color. But I still needed a product with peroxide to treat just the roots
of my bangs, crown and temples. I decided to try another product that is fairly
non-toxic but does contain a very small amount of PPD’s – it’s called Tints of Nature.

According to the manufacturer, Tints of Nature is the only available line of permanent hair colors to use natural,
certified organic ingredients wherever feasible. The highly effective formula
also has a naturally derived base. It is paraben free and contains no harsh
ammonia, resorcinol or nonoxynol, thus helping to ensure damage free results.
It contains extra mild, low odor, pharmaceutical grade peroxide and the lowest
possible percentage of PPD pigments. I chose Tints of Nature 4CH Rich Chocolate Brown which gave me a
gorgeous brown color with golden highlights. But I will not use it all over my head – only to treat the stubborn grays!
Once the grays have been treated once with a peroxide formula, Palette by Nature will continue
to manage them while keeping my hair shiny and healthy-looking.

Administration Notes:

For shorter hair, one box of Palette by Nature will have ample coverage. For longer hair,
you will need two boxes, and if you have thick, near-waist-length hair, you
might just need three. Choose from the shades called natural if you want to avoid red tones. Yes, it is the most
expensive of all of the non-toxic hair colorants, but it is also the only one
that is absolutely free of all harmful chemicals, including PPD. I recommend
having 3 large bath towels that are devoted to covering the surfaces around you
when you use this product. Cover the floor you are standing on as well as all
of the countertop. This hair color will stain! Once you have applied it and
have your cap on, make sure to remove all stray color from your skin or it will
stain your skin, too. Use plenty of conditioner to aid the rinsing out process
in the shower, and take advantage of the bottle of stain remover included in
the package to clean the shower floor. Once you are done, this color will last.
It does not fade like all of the
other hair colors do!

Update - I Love Madison Reed Hair Color!

My hair has turned grayer with age and now requires a hair color product that can cover gray well.

I lost 1/3 of my hair and had to cut it off just past my shoulders following my cancer surgery/hysterectomy. I was feeling extremely fatigued, depressed and my hair was falling out in huge fist-fulls due to a sudden loss in hormones. After meeting with naturopath Dr. Monique Mazza, I began taking a small amount of bio-identical hormones. Just a tiny amount applied vaginally turned my world around. I felt happy and full of energy. My hair grew back! Other great supplements I take that also benefit my hair include Natural Factors Biosil, Barlean's high lignin flax seed oil and Carlson's fish oil. This is the first time since I was in my 20's that my hair has grown this long!

There are many supplements on the market, and distinguishing which ones are best for you can be daunting. Fortunately, I found two different Naturopaths that helped me determine where to start. After analyzing the results of my lab tests, I based my supplementation on concrete medical data.

The first Naturopath I worked with was Dr.David Getoff who is skilled in performing the Bi-Digital O-Ring Test. I was diagnosed with ULMS in November 2008 and had my first appointment with Dr. Getoff one month later. One visit with Dr. Getoff allowed me to return home with a solid foundation of nutritional supplements that I knew were effective for my body. He requested blood tests to check certain nutrient levels in my body, including vitamin D.

The next month, shortly after my second surgery in January 2009, I had my first consultation with Dr. Monique Mazza who specializes in strengthening the immune system and detoxification. Dr. Mazza identified though lab tests that I was carrying excessive levels of parabens and phthalates in my body. Parabens are preservatives that are found in most commercial self-care products such as shampoos, conditioners, facial cleansing products and moisturizers, cosmetics, shower gels, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals and even toothpaste. Phthalates are compounds used in plastics which increase flexibility and durability. Exposure comes from food packaging, heating foods in plastic, and, in my case, breathing in the fumes from a laminating machine!

In the sunshine state we are blessed with the Optimum Health Institute located in Lemon Grove, CA. A short distance up the coast we also have the Hallelujah Acres Lifestyle Center in Fallbrook, CA. The Optimum Health Institute offers one, two, and three week programs. Prices start at $1,000. per week, but scholarships are available if you apply in advance. The Hallelujah Acres Lifestyle Centers offer 2-day, 5-day and 10-day programs. Prices are $550, $1200 and $2300, respectively. OHI has a center in Austin, Texas as well as the San Diego campus. Hallelujah Acres offers lifestyle centers throughout the country.

We are introduced to the Wheat Grass Room where everyone comes to juice their own fresh wheat grass throughout the day. Gentle exercise is included in the form of walking/jogging and beginning yoga classes. During the first week we attend classes to discover how to eliminate toxins with wheatgrass, rejuvelac, juice fasting, raw organic food, colon cleansing, exercise, and massage. We learn how to optimize digestion in all organs (brain, mouth, throat, stomach, pancreas, liver, intestines, and colon) and how our body works to absorb healthy nutrients. Everyone discovers the best way to combine foods to optimize the way your body digests food and absorbs nutrients. Another class was how personal and household products can bring toxins into your life. We discover organic products that are better for us and our planet. Another class features useful tools such as juicers, dehydrators, and sprouting supplies that can help you at home.

The Mind-Body connection is addressed when we learn to practice Alpha meditation techniques to quiet the mind, manage stress, release tension, and control pain. A class in emotional detoxification teaches us how to feel, process, and understand the important role your emotions play in creating and maintaining health and well-being. We discover the healing power of forgiveness. In mental detoxification we learn how beliefs, thoughts, and emotions can make you sick. We learn how to cancel, reframe, and replace negative thoughts with positive ones to facilitate the healing process and develop a mindfulness practice for maintaining a positive attitude – gratitude, affirmations, visualization, journaling, and living in the present.
We learn how to preserve enzymes during food preparation, make fermented foods, plan menus and start an organic garden. The third week covers dehydrated food preparation including "live" crackers, advanced breathing, and advanced Alpha meditation techniques for directing the mind to heal the body.

Many of the people I met at OHI had been there before. They make a yearly pilgrimage to rededicate their commitment to the lifestyle. The campus includes lovely garden areas to sit and relax in the sun, rest and read. I hope to go there again in the future. It's hard for me to do a complete juice fast at home, even for a day, but I was definitely able to accomplish it at OHI.
Participants are encouraged to exercise in the great outdoors and spend personal quiet time in reflection and relaxation. Fellowship, support and devotions are also part of their program.

The Hallelujah Recovery Diet is a supercharged version of The Hallelujah Diet, increasing the number of servings of an optimally processed barley juice powder and the number of servings of fresh pressed vegetable juice (2/3 carrot and 1/3 greens).

Juicing is the most efficient way to nourish the body at cellular level. Consuming a vegetable or barley juice drink on an hourly basis will provide the body with powerful nutrition in an easy to assimilate form. These 12, hourly juices provide the body with a broad spectrum of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and trace elements often missing from our foods, that the body uses to rebuild the body’s self healing ability.

Note: The Hallelujah Diet is a vegan diet. I began my program with this exact diet. After a few years I added organic, pastured beef and chicken and eggs for protein/fat with no harm. I found that protein was essential for maintaining muscle in my body. I now believe that the most important aspect of the anti-cancer diet is avoiding foods that increase glucose levels, soliciting an insulin response.

Breakfast
Before eating anything, take one serving of BarleyMax. You may take the powder dry, allowing it to dissolve in the mouth or by mixing it with a few ounces of purified water or fresh vegetable or fruit juice. I like to combine a heaping tablespoon of BarleyMax Mint in a large shaker of ice water. Begin the hourly juice regime:

Start with barley juice powder at 7:00 a.m.

Then a fresh pressed carrot juice at 8:00 a.m.

Have another barley juice powder at 9:00 a.m.

Alternate the two juices every other hour, skipping at lunch and dinner

Note: If you can, it is best to wait a while before eating solid food in the morning so that the body’s cleansing and eliminating efforts which are associated with overnight fasting continue for several hours after rising. This is also known as intermittent fasting. If and when you feel you need something with fiber at breakfast, have a piece of flourless, sprouted toast (Ezekiel 4:9, Oasis flourless, etc) with a teaspoon of coconut oil or raw, organic almond butter.

Mid-Morning
Drink an 8 oz glass of fresh vegetable juice. Hallelujah Acres recommends two-thirds carrot and one-third greens. I personally like to juice a pitcher of carrots with a few stalks of dandelion greens or kale leaves, a pinch of ginger and a quarter of an organic apple.

If you did not have any fiber food for breakfast, a green smoothie is an excellent way to take ground flax seed or B-Flax-D. In a Vita-mix blender, combine 1 cup cold water, 1/3 frozen banana, 1 heaping teaspoon BarleyMax Berry flavor, and a fistful of organic parsley. The parsley added to this green shake tastes great and is a great diuretic that flushes out toxins from the body. (Don't try this in a regular blender - a Vita-mix is a powerful blender that can pulverize the stalks of parsley.)

For those who need to stabilize blood sugar, or keep hunger under control and support body weight, some celery sticks, broccoli, or cauliflower florets, etc., spread with raw, organic almond butter can be consumed.

Lunch
At least 20 minutes before lunch, have another serving of BarleyMax, as at breakfast.
If fruit has been consumed during the morning hours, have a vegetable salad. Too much fruit in a day is not advised, and though the sugar is natural, too much sugar can cause problems when you have cancer. (Fruits cleanse the body, while vegetables feed the body.) While it is preferable to keep the lunch meal raw, a little cooked food at noon is fine, especially if you want to maintain weight. A whole grain pita pocket filled with veggies is a good option.

Mid-Afternoon
Continue alternating BarleyMax and vegetable juices.

Dinner
At least 20 minutes before dinner, have another serving of BarleyMax. Then have a LARGE green salad of spinach and leaf lettuce (never head lettuce as it has very little nutritional value) along with a variety of vegetables, including some avocado or ground seeds or nuts.

After the salad comes the cooked food portion. This could be steamed veggies, baked sweet potato, whole grains, whole grain pasta with organic marinara sauce, squash (baked or steamed), or beans.

Evening
Continue sipping BarleyMax until bedtime.

It's okay to be flexible; just remember the basics:

Keep 85% of your menu as raw, plant-based foods with the addition of organic, pastured meat and eggs for protein

Ensure that no more than 15% of your daily intake is cooked or processed plant-based foods

Alternate BarleyMax and fresh pressed carrot-based vegetable juices throughout the entire day

Foods to Include: Organic vegetables with the exception starchy vegetables such as regular potatoes and corn; Organic, pastured meat and eggs; Food4Life Ezekiel flourless sprouted breads and tortillas or Food4Life Gluten-Free Multiseed muffins; Fresh, organic, low-glycemic fruits such as berries, citrus fruits, melons, papaya, avocado, stone fruits and apples; Raw, organic nuts such as walnuts and almonds.

Afterwards, many choose to continue a maintenance serving of 1 to 2 capsules daily.

Using a good digestive enzyme with each juice and 2 to 4 with each meal for the first 3 to 4 weeks to maximize the absorption of nutrients from foods so that the body receives the most nutrition available from these foods.

The use of curcumin, the biologically active extract of the turmeric spice, can help supply the body with an abundance of free radical fighting nutrients.

Iodine supplementation to support the thyroid and the immune system.

When following a plant-based diet, it is important to insure that a good source of essential fats is available. Taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil or Carlson's Fish Oil will help meet the essential fat needs of the body. High Omega-3 oil aids in the metabolizing of hormones which can have a positive impact if your tumor is hormone positive.

It is also important to avoid a B12 deficiency by taking a sublingual B12 supplement (the active methylcobalamin form) if you don't eat beef.

As the body begins cleansing it is important that the toxins are eliminated timely and efficiently through optimal bowel function (2 to 3 well-formed stools daily). A good fiber supplement may be helpful in achieving optimal bowel function.

Stress can have a detrimental impact on the body’s ability to heal; stress should be eliminated.

Ample amounts of sunshine are important for optimal production of vitamin D. If adequate sunshine is not possible, a vitamin D3 supplement can help meet the body’s need for vitamin D. It is wise to have vitamin D levels tested prior to supplementation. My vitamin D level is usually between 80 - 100.

My husband and I call the nature walk surrounding our home "the Healing Trail."

King David said, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones." Prov. 17:22.

Just as surely as your mind can make your body sick, it can make your body well. The mind, the body, and the spirit are all inextricably interconnected. Worry, anger, jealousy, hate, ill will, grudges, vindictiveness, irritation, resentment, guilt, depression, anxiety, lack of joy and happiness, and all other negative emotions and thoughts have a negative effect upon the body and open the door for sickness and disease.

There are now quite a number of cases where a disease or sickness or altered health can be traced back to a mental cause. Many health problems, especially cancer, do not entirely clear up unless the mental aspect is also addressed. There are physiological reasons why the body reacts so dramatically to our thoughts and emotions. Every part of our being, including our cells, sympathize or respond to the positive and negative states of our minds. For this reason, when we are diagnosed with cancer, we must change our lifestyle to alleviate mental and emotional stressors in order to allow our mind to be free to instruct the body to heal itself.

Some people can handle more stress than others, and some can be so emotionally fragile that just a little pressure can cause immeasurable harm. I had to realize that just because I was capable of performing well under stressful conditions, my spirit was not. Stress can shut down all the vital forces of the body and the mind. The interconnection and sympathy between mind, body, and spirit is so strong that in the treatment of cancer a wise person will pay attention to every part of their being with the understanding that this is essential for total or complete healing.

Action items for healing cancer:

1. If at all possible, take time off from work. Make it your full time job to minister to yourself. Your mind can aid in making your body well, but you will need to be actively involved in the process. When I was diagnosed, I stopped working and made it my full time job to be well.

2. Spend time reading books that will assist you in your healing journey. One of the best books I can recommend is The Hallelujah Diet by George Malkmus, It includes stories of survivors of life-threatening diseases that used a full, holistic program to strengthen the body's own innate power to heal. Another great book is You Can Conquer Cancer by Ian Gawler, a miraculous story of healing that was strongly tied to mind-body work and meditation.

3. Practice Guided Imagery that is specifically designed for healing. You will be relaxing your physical body, emotions and mind, then guided through a visual sequence where your mind directs your body to utilize all aspects of the immune system to fight the cancer. In order to be effective, guided imagery must be administered after you have relaxed your entire body and cleared your mind to receive the healing directives.

When you are fighting cancer, the mind is your battlefront. It is absolutely mandatory that you focus your mind on everything that is uplifting. Realize that when you entertain negative thoughts, you are effectively using negative guided imagery on yourself. Your mind will follow whatever directive it hears from you. You can't leave it up to chance, or up to the fear that resides in your subconscious mind. What can you do to alter the directions that your mind is sending to your body? Using guided imagery frequently throughout the day will reprogram your subconscious mind and activate powerful healing capabilities.

A verse from the Bible talks about the Mind-Body connection this way:

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. NKJV

Doctors who specialize in mind-body healing believe that our bodies hold on to negative energy from past hurts and sorrows in our lives. That negative energy can interfere with your health. Many believe that if you don't clear yourself of these past negative emotions, you will not be able to fully heal. This is particularly true of resentment and anger. It is also true for emotions that you suppressed in the past, not wanting to experience them in the moment, that get stuck and can lead to disease.

If you are ready to take the next step, work through the following Cancer Healing Guide. I chose to write out my answer to each question, one at a time, and read them aloud to a therapist. This is a great place to begin if you want to make sure that trapped negative emotions are not preventing you from healing from your disease.

We live in a toxic world - there is no doubt about that. Toxins found in our environment (air, water, food, and all of the products that touch our skin) gradually build up over the years until we reach a personal level of toxicity that the body can no longer deal with and ultimately leads to a toxic crisis. Toxins can act as carcinogens which set the stage for cancer to begin.

A chronically stressful lifestyle and/or painful emotions suffered in the past also have the ability to turn on hormones that weaken the immune system, suppressing the body's natural ability to stop cancer cells before they get out of control.

Healing from cancer is a two part approach: 1. Reduce the toxic burden in the body; 2. Flood the body with healing nutrients from living foods. If you don't discover what led to the toxic crisis in the first place, you will always find yourself back in the same place - in a toxic crisis that leads to organic disease.

If you want to heal cancer, begin by detoxing the body and the emotions:

1. Stop physically stressing your body with toxins: Eat organic foods, free of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, hormones, artificial ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, etc.. Use non-toxic cleaning and skin care products. Purify your drinking and shower water. Reduce contact with pollutants that you breathe.

2. Stop mental and emotional stress, both past and present: Work with a therapist to process and dissolve the negative energy caused by past hurts that becomes stored or trapped in the body. Forgiveness is essential to healing - forgiving yourself as well as those who hurt you. Examine your present lifestyle and change the things that cause you stress. You may need to temporarily stop working so you can devote all of your energy to healing.

Past and present negative energy must be dissolved so that your body can use all of its vital energy on healing rather than on managing the effects of stress.

As soon as I was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma, I went to see a reputable naturopath who ordered various tests to check the source(s) of my toxicity. You can't guess at this; you need to go to a professional who can use laboratory tests to discover what is going on in your own body. For me, I had off-the-chart levels of parabens and pthalates, as well as some metals. The way my body dissolved estrogen (estrogen methylation) was producing more toxic chemicals, so I also needed to do something to alter that pathway.

My naturopath prescribed various supplements to help with my specific detoxification needs, and made it clear that if I didn't stop ingesting more toxins, the detox program would be useless. I was retested along the way to make sure the detoxification program was working, and indeed, it was!

Soon after, I attended the Optimum Health Institute where detoxification was a big part of the healing program. According to both OHI and the Hippocrates Health Institute, drinking wheat grass is an integral part of detoxification. It cleanses the body as well as flooding it with nutrients. Wheat grass nourishes the blood, lowers blood pressure, and removes toxins from the body. Used for decades by healthcare professionals, wheat grass can be consumed as part of a detox program to reduce illness and restore health. A wheat grass juice detox can improve the digestive system, remove heavy metals from the bloodstream, detox the liver, remove poisons and toxins from the body, increase energy and functionality, and nourish the blood.

Wheatgrass provides vitamins, minerals and living enzymes to the body. The nutrients within this beneficial plant remove toxins from the body and improve the health and functionality of the body without side effects. When you have cancer, it should be consumed round the clock daily for optimum results.

Wheatgrass benefits the body by providing every amino acid, vitamin and mineral (some in only trace amounts) necessary for human nutrition. The nutritional value of wheatgrass is substantially higher than other vegetable and fruit options of equal weight. For example, it would take 2.5 lbs. of vegetables to match the nutritional value of 1 oz. of wheatgrass. Because wheatgrass packs such a strong nutritional punch, it can deliver antibacterial properties that cleanse the liver, antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and antiaging properties with just one shot of the juice (1 oz.).

When I attended the Optimum Health Institute, we harvested our own wheatgrass and juiced it daily, drinking it throughout the day. We also used it for wheatgrass implants. This is where you give yourself an enema with purified water followed by an enema of wheatgrass which you try to retain for 10 minutes to "implant" the wheatgrass in the bowel. If you have cancer, this is a great aid in the detoxification of the liver.

Once I returned home from the Institute, I continued to consume wheat grass. After careful research, I highly recommend BarleyMax wheatgrass from Hallelujah Acres. I think it is the best wheatgrass powder available, and believe it to be better than fresh wheatgrass that is quickly grown for commercial use at many 'juice bars'. BarleyMax is a certified organic whole-food concentrate made from the juice of young barley grass and alfalfa. It is kept enzymatically alive with low-temperature processing that does not damage heat sensitive nutrients. It contains no additives or fillers. It is a 100% pure juice powder that promotes detoxification and is a rich source of anti-oxidants. Because of its richness in nutrients, drinking BarleyMax and freshly extracted vegetable juices will aid the body in detoxification and in the activation of its self-healing.

I enjoy filling a shaker with purified ice and water, then adding a heaping tablespoon of BarleyMax Mint. It's refreshing spearmint taste makes it pleasurable to drink throughout the day. Try drinking at least 8 ounces every 2 hours from sunrise to bedtime. Alternate your wheat grass with 8 ounces of freshly pressed vegetable juice every 2 hours. For example, 7AM - 8 ounces wheat grass; 8AM - 8 ounces freshly pressed carrot/apple juice; 9AM - 8 ounces wheat grass, etc.

A diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma is devastating. It's a rare and aggressive cancer that is not as well-studied as some other cancers because of the small number of cases diagnosed each year. I was surprised when I received my diagnosis. Leiomyosarcoma is a sarcoma of the smooth muscle tissue, occurring most often in the digestive tract or uterus or bladder or prostate. Leiomyosarcomas are aggressive tumors that are often difficult to treat. The prognosis is poor, with survival rates among the lowest of all soft tissue sarcomas. That's why I immediately went on a total change of lifestyle including relaxation, nutrition, exercise and supplementation.

After suffering with vaginal bleeding for many years, I finally decided to have a hysterectomy in November 2008. I chose to have a laparoscopic hysterectomy because it was less invasive and the recuperation time was much faster. I was anxious to get back to my work as a classroom Special Education teacher.

Everything was cut into tiny pieces so that it could be removed through the small incision in my belly button. They call this process morcellation. It's not the best way to remove cancer! But it wasn't until a week later that the lab informed my gynecologist that they had found uterine leiomyosarcoma there. I was also told that leiomyosarcoma does not respond to chemotherapy or radiation. Removal by surgery is the best form of treatment. My doctor consulted with M.D. Anderson about my case. I had a second operation to remove my cervix and check for any signs of cancer in my abdomen. The cervix was cancer-free and there was no sign of metastasis. Now it was up to me to strengthen my immune system so that it could fight the microscopic remains of the cancer and prevent it from returning. My lab report said it was a Stage II/III with a mitotic count of 100 in 10X magnification field. The sky high mitotic count definitely downgraded my prognosis. I was told I'd have a 50% chance to live 2 years, and a 20% chance to live 5 years. My mother immediately told me that I was going to live, and I believed her.

Please join me on my journey to strengthen the immune system. Throughout this blog you'll find information about nutrition and supplements that researchers have shown to stop angiogenesis (a fundamental step in the transition of tumors from a dormant state to a malignant one). Discover how to use your mind to direct the healing process, which type of exercise helps stimulate the lymph system, and so much more. Come to a place where the talk is positive and uplifting, and where integrative and natural treatments can be explored.
NEW! December 2010 I have gone for over two years without any recurrence of the cancer. When you are speaking of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma, that is a milestone! Every day is precious. My number one goal each day is to stay peaceful and calm inside, like it feels when you've just had a massage. Guided Imagery and Meditation help me to do this, along with walks in nature and deep breathing. My second job is to focus on myself: my nutrition, my supplements, my juicing, my exercise... and so much more. It's my job now, and I don't feel guilty about doing it. I still have time to cook for my family, keep the house clean, shop, run errands, and teach a little bit. But all of those things have to come second to my staying well. So I pace myself. I hope you will be encouraged to stay on your path for healing.
NEW! October 2012 It has been almost 4 years now since my diagnosis. I have remained cancer-free. My lifestyle is second-nature now, and very enjoyable to me. I hope to encourage you on your personal journey to strengthen your immune system.
NEW! June 2014 It has been nearly 5 years and 7 months since my diagnosis and I continue to remain completely free and clear disease. I continue to follow the entire anti-cancer program, and will do so for the rest of my life because once you have had cancer it is normal to have microscopic cancer cells that remain in your body. But your immune system is designed to keep them in check and will do so if you continue to follow a lifestyle that keeps the immune system functioning properly. That includes keeping stress hormones turned off with meditation and guided imagery!
